Creating a Social Media Presence
By now you’ve not only heard about social media, but you know that it is one of the most powerful Internet marketing tools going. But exactly what counts as “social media”? What kinds of social media are there? And how can you best use social media to enhance your overall online presence?

Chapter 1: Quick Explanation Of Social Media

Social media sites aren’t limited to Facebook and Twitter. In fact, there are several categories of social media, and you can use all of them to one extent or another to promote your brand online. Here is a quick explanation of some of the different categories of social media that you can choose to work in:

Blogs: Blogs are like online journals. Some people use them to talk about their private lives using settings that only allow their friends to read posts. But many blogs are published for the general public and carry articles on everything from current events to informational articles related to a particular business.

Blog communities like LiveJournal are the place where the term “friend” or “friending” started being applied to people who chose to give access to each other to read each other’s private blogs. Frequently, the people doing this already knew each other in the offline world, but increasingly being “friends” came to mean either an offline or an online relationship.

Content Communities: These are online communities created to share and comment on specific kinds of content. Think youTube for videos or Flickr for photographs. However, there are content communities that share mixed-media content (Digg) or even web page bookmarks (del.icio.us).

Social Networks: These are the kinds of sites that most people tend to think about when they hear the term “social media.” Sites like Facebook, Myspace, and LinkedIn help people make and stay in contact with each other. Twitter is another hugely popular social networking site, as evidenced by the fact that Conan O’Brien and President Barack Obama are among the several million people with accounts.  And, of course, “friending” is how people form communities on the social networking sites.
